Cécile Lempert use du médium photographique comme outil de prédilection au sein de son travail pictural. L’artiste en reprend certaines propriétés, comme son cadrage plus radical, qui s’illustre notamment dans ses compositions en split-screen. En outre, il lui permet d’élever ses sources, familiales, plus intimes, en les alliant à des références iconographiques historiques. C’est par ce dialogue entre archives et archives personnelles qu’elle trouve l’ouverture vers un récit plus distancié, et dans une temporalité nouvelle, choisie. Ce jeu chronologique lui permet d’explorer le sens des origines, de l’appartenance et des racines, dans le but de mieux comprendre son présent. Son usage de couleurs éthérées et détrempées préserve l’écoulement de ses sujets dans des scènes aqueuses, intangibles.

Cécile Lempert uses photography as her medium of choice in her pictorial work. The artist draws on certain properties of photography, such as its more radical framing, which is particularly evident in her split-screen compositions. It also allows her to elevate her more intimate, family-related sources by combining them with historical iconographic references. It is through this dialogue between archives and personal archives that she finds an opening towards a more distanced narrative, in a new, chosen temporality. This chronological interplay allows her to explore the meaning of origins, belonging and roots, with the aim of better understanding her present. Her use of ethereal, watery colours preserves the flow of her subjects in aqueous, intangible scenes.

Biography

Cécile Lempert was born in Dortmund in 1994, she is a German painter based in Cologne, Germany.

The painter studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf under Prof. Peter Piller and Prof. Stefan Kürten, graduating in 2021.

Exhibitions (selection)

The artist’s work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in Germany, the United-States, China and South Korea. These include exhibitions at CASTLE (Los Angeles), IAH (Seoul) ; Super Super Markt (Berlin), Leo Gallery (Shanghai), Braunsfelder (Cologne).

Cécile Lempert’s work has also been presented at several international art fairs: Material fair, Mexico (2025), Art Cologne (2023) and June Art Fair, Basel (2023).
