Cécile Lempert, A tender spot, 2025, distemper on canvas, 50x80 cm
‘An old express rattled past, as if clattering hooves of past scenes galloped from brutal angles.’ Patti Smith. Extract from M Train, 2015
The Elsa Meunier gallery is pleased to present the artworks of Cécile Lempert in the personal exhibition A calloused moment. This is the third collaboration between the artist and the gallery.
It is a carriage suspended in the passing landscape. A tender bubble that time threatens to burst. It is an escape from what weighs us down, what bog us down, diluted by the whistling of the air beneath the speed, brushed onto the horizon. Bluish tones awaken, meeting every hour of the day and night. With the presentation of this new series, the sequence that Cécile Lempert depicts is ephemeral, echoing what escapes us: the space we travel through or the ages of life.
The artist continues to narrate her personal experience through her creative process, drawing inspiration from her own ‘collection of images’ in the form of photographs, then preparatory studies. Cécile Lempert consolidates her intimate archive, a universe where the boundaries of the subject blur and are reflected in the slender windows. The image is nuanced with tiny vibrations on the canvas, perpetual jolts evoking the fragmented cut-outs of a split-screen. The journey becomes a reverie, shifting towards abstract poetry. Thus, Cécile Lempert opens the doors to a refuge that is conducive to both meditation and wandering of the mind.
