La galerie Elsa Meunier est heureuse de présenter pour la première fois le travail du peintre allemand Ole Goldt à l’occasion de l’exposition « Tales ». Il s’agit de la première exposition de l’artiste en France.
Les histoires transforment nécessairement la réalité. Parce qu’elles naissent d’un regard, d’une voix, d’un geste, il ne leur est pas d’autre vocation que celle de créer un mouvement, et par ce mouvement-même d’apporter une vie qui puisse cohabiter avec des éléments parfois contradictoires. Ce processus de narration, Ole Goldt le résume par un mot dont la simple prononciation évoque celle d’une formule magique : Arabesque. Cet épithète, qualifié par Edgar Allan Poe d’« espèce d’écriture » dans ses Histoires extraordinaires (1840), le peintre le nourrit de couleurs, formes et personnages répartis sur la toile comme des mots sur une page. Car l’arabesque n’est pas qu’un décor, c’est une fiction composée, un conte imaginé sur la surface libre d’un tableau. L’histoire que nous raconte Ole Goldt est à la manière d’un sablier s’écoulant, constamment renversé. Elle laisse s’exprimer des éclatements de voix et des jeux de transparence dilués sous les couches nombreuses.
Ces formes oscillantes, ces visages aiguisés sur des fonds de motifs neutres, puisent autant leur inspiration dans le yokai, gravure sur bois japonaise, que dans les oeuvres rappelant celles de Kai Althoff et de Norbert Schwontkowski. Les éléments, harmonisés par leur existence commune sur un même plan, s’animent d’autant plus lorsqu’Ole Goldt en transgresse le cadre. Si chaque sujet a son importance, leur place dans l’espace est décalée. Déplaçant nos repères, surprenant notre habitude de regardant face à la peinture, le peintre nous enrobe un peu plus de son univers fin et chaloupé. L’œil, amené à flotter, n’a plus qu’à se laisser prendre par le récit.

The Elsa Meunier Gallery is pleased to present the work by German painter Ole Goldt for the first time as part of the exhibition “Tales”. This is the artist’s first exhibition in France.
Stories inevitably transform reality. Because they arise from a glance, a voice, or a gesture, their sole purpose is to create movement—and through that very movement to breathe life into elements that are sometimes contradictory. Ole Goldt sums up this process of storytelling with a word whose very pronunciation evokes a magic spell: Arabesque. This epithet, described by Edgar Allan Poe as a “species of writing” in his Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1840), is brought to life by the painter through colors, shapes, and characters arranged on the canvas like words on a page. For the arabesque is not merely decoration; it is a composed fiction, a tale imagined on the open surface of a painting. The story Ole Goldt tells us is like an hourglass constantly being turned over as its sand flows out. It gives voice to bursts of sound and plays on transparency, all diluted beneath numerous layers.
These undulating forms, these sharply defined faces set against backgrounds of neutral patterns, draw their inspiration as much from yokai, Japanese woodblock prints, as from works reminiscent of the ones by Kai Althoff and by Norbert Schwontkowski. The elements, harmonized by their shared existence on the same plane, come to life even more when Ole Goldt breaks the frame. While each subject is significant, their placement within the space is offset. By shifting our points of reference and surprising our habitual way of looking at a painting, the artist draws us a little deeper into his delicate, swaying universe. The eye, led to drift, need only let itself be carried away by the narrative.

Ole Goldt est un artiste qui vit et travaille à Hambourg. Il est titulaire d’un MFA de l’University of Arts and Design de Kiel en Allemagne (2025). Ses oeuvres ont été inclues dans des expositions duo et collectives internationales. Parmi elles on peut citer celles chez Scroll, NYC, USA ; Acappella, Naples, Italie. Récemment ses peintures ont été présentées dans une exposition personnelle intitulée ‘Claustrum' avec Painters Painting Paintings.
