A l’occasion de l’exposition collective intitulée « Double Portraits », la galerie Elsa Meunier est heureuse de réunir le travail de Merve Ceylan, Nicolas Gaume, Louise Janet, Johan Larnouhet, Giulio Noccesi et de Pauline Rintsch.
Les portraits sont des énigmes à résoudre. Toujours, je me suis demandée ce qui décidait un artiste à choisir ses sujets, à les faire se rencontrer sur la toile. Pour ceux qui écrivent, si le portrait fait personnage, le double portrait fait naître un dialogue, une histoire. Le peintre peint l’autre pour nous le présenter. Ou pour se révéler lui-même. Le portrait peut être un récit autobiographique, le désir d’un ancrage, une narration plus abstraite, une fresque d’émotions. Il sert parfois à démontrer son propre style. Au fond, vouloir comprendre la raison du portrait, c’est poser la question du sens de la peinture pour son artiste. C’est se plonger dans une intimité aux multiples visages, à une liberté totale, un prétexte inconnu. L’exposition « Double Portraits » questionne les identités du monde, de l’autre et des artistes eux-mêmes.

On the occasion of the group exhibition titled ‘Double Portraits’ gallery Elsa Meunier is delighted to present the work by Merve Ceylan, Nicolas Gaume, Louise Janet, Johan Larnouhet, Giulio Noccesi and Pauline Rintsch.
Portraits are puzzles to be solved. Always, I have wondered what decides an artist to choose their subjects, to bring them together on the canvas. For those who write, whilst a portrait creates a character, double portraits give rise to a dialogue, a story. The painter paints the other to present them to us. Or to reveal themselves. A portrait can be an autobiographical account, a desire for a sense of belonging, a more abstract narrative, a tapestry of emotions. It is sometimes used to demonstrate one’s own style. Ultimately, seeking to understand the purpose of the portrait is to ask what painting means to the artist. It is to immerse oneself in an intimacy with many faces, in total freedom, in an unknown pretext. The exhibition ‘Double Portraits’ explores the identities of the world, of the other, and of the artists themselves.
